Endodontics: Is it right for you?

You will never find a one-size-fits-all shoe at the store, just as you will never find the same dental treatment method for each individual. Many people may go through similar procedures, but what works for one person may not work for another. When one individual goes to receive a checkup at the dentist, he or she may need to undergo an endodontic procedure while another patient leaves after 30 minutes.

What is endodontics?

“Endodontists are specialists in saving teeth, committed to helping you maintain your natural smile for a lifetime,” the American Association of Endodontics, AAE, explains on their website, aae.org. An endodontist has at least two extra years of education, “to become experts in performing root canal treatment and diagnosing and treating tooth pain.”

A dentist will recommend seeing an endodontist if a root canal or another specific procedure is necessary. According to the AAE, endodontists can also help to treat:

  • Tooth pain or injury
  • Increased sensitivity to hot and cold on the teeth
  • Oral and facial swelling

Endodontics can use procedures, such as root canals, to save the natural tooth and prevent the need for tooth extraction. By saving the natural teeth, a patient will be able to continue enjoying the foods that he or she prefers without worry of pain or damage to an implant.

Before assuming the worst case scenario, consult a dental professional and see if an endodontic treatment is right for you. In some instances, a patient’s condition will require a different form of endodontic procedure.

Possible endodontic treatments

After the initial endodontic procedure, patients will be able to return to a regular life. However, there is a chance that the patient may need to return for another procedure, known as endodontic retreatment.

“Sometimes, a tooth that has been treated doesn't heal properly and can become painful or diseased months or even years after treatment,” the AAE warns. When one experiences similar pain in the same area after the procedure is complete, “An additional procedure may be able to support healing and save your tooth.”

The AAE adds that re-treatment can also be necessary if:
  • New decay exposes the root canal filling material to bacteria
  • A loose, cracked or broken crown or filling exposes the tooth to a new infection
  • A tooth sustains a fracture

The best way to prevent the need for retreatment is to practice proper oral hygiene and attend regular dental checkups. Upon receiving an endodontic treatment, patients will need to follow all instructions for proper care from their endodontist.

Another procedure of endodontics is endodontic surgery. “Endodontic surgery can be used to locate small fractures or hidden canals that weren't detected on x-rays or during previous treatment,” the AAE explains. While surgery can be more complex than a regular procedure, “Endodontists use advanced technologies like digital imaging and operating microscopes to perform surgeries quickly, comfortably and successfully,” the AAE adds.

If you are in need of treatment or believe you may need to have a professional look at past dental work, do not hesitate to seek help. The procedure will not be as bad as society makes it seem.
